History of Muar
Muar is said to have been settled as early as the 14th century. The Sumatran prince Parameswara is said to have passed through Muar, settling there for a brief period before proceeding north to found the town of Malacca. After the fall of Malacca, the Portugese built a fort in Muar, called Muar Fort or Fortaleza de Muar at Bentayan in Muar.
In 1855, when the Temenggong became the de facto ruler of the whole of Johor, Muar became the residence of Sultan Ali, the powerless sultan who was the actual heir to the throne dating back to the Malacca Sultanate. Read also the History of Johor.
Modern-day Muar was founded by Lim Tong Lian, headman of a group of Chinese settlers who established pepper and gambier plantations by the banks of the Muar River. Indenture labourers were brought to Muar under the Kangchu system of government, similar to that of Batu Pahat.
