About Mukah

Mukah is a small town at the mouth of the Batang Mukah in the Mukah Division of Sarawak. It is a fishing village which you can visit should you ever find yourself in Sibu. The people here are mostly from the Melanau tribe. They celebrate the Kaul Festival on the second Sunday in April. During that time, Mukah takes on a festive atmosphere with beach celebrations and rituals honouring the spirits of the sea.

Kampung Tellian is a stilt village just beyond the centre of Mukah. Here, you can visit Lanin Dana (Tel: 084 871543, Web: www.lamindana.com), a sort of living museum showcasing the traditional Melanau artefacts. It is in fact housed within a Melanau tallhouse, and is being managed by six generations of the same family. Among the activities you can get here include traditional massage, river tours to the sago farm and to the sago bakehouse, and opportunity to try Melanau delicacies such as the umai (raw fish marinated in lime and onions) and sago shoots. For groups, you can make arrangements to watch cultural performances also. Do contact Lanin Dana in advance if you wish to pay it a visit. Avoid their peak periods, such as Chinese New Year week, Christmas week and Kaul Festival week.
