Negrito is an Orang Asli group in Malaysia. There are only about 2,000 of them today. They are believed to be the earliest inhabitants of the Malay peninsula.
The Negritoes are usually found in the northern part of Peninsula Malaysia. Those from Perak, Kedah and Pahang are also called Semang. The word "Semang" actually mean debt slaves. The lowland Semang tribes are called Sakai. Those in Kelantan and Terengganu were called Pangan, meaning "forest people".
The people of the Negrito ethnic group are found all throughout Southeast Asia. They are short with very dark brown complexion. Their hair curls closely over their head. In Peninsular Malaysia, they include several subgroups such as the Bateq, Jahai, Kensiu, Kintak, Lanoh and Mendriq.
In the 19th century, many Negritoes, like the other tribes of Orang Asli, were made slaves by the Malays who consider them savages. Often their villages would be raided, the men killed while the women and children captured and sold. It is recorded that the first Resident of Perak, JWW Birch, was murdered by Dato Maharajalela in Pasir Salak because Birch abolished slavery in Perak, and yet kept slaves within his own household. The abolishing of slavery was a severe financial blow to Dato Maharajalela because his income was derived from raiding Orang Asli settlements for slaves.
