About Niah National Park

Niah National Park is a national park in the Miri Division of Sarawak. It covers 32 square kilometers, making it one of the smaller - but no less significant - national parks in the state. It was gazetted as a national historic monument in 1958, and elevated to the status of national park on 23 November 1974.

Located 115 km south of Miri, Niah National Park is most famous for Niah Caves, a cluster of caves that have yielded some of the oldest human remains in Southeast Asia.

Getting there

Driving to Batu Niah, the town outside the park from Miri will take you about close to 2 hours. If you need a ride, some times you can join a 4WD, van or private car parked at the local bus station near the tourism office. These "private taxis" can ferry a carload of visitors to Niah for RM15 per pax. It may be sensible to pre-arrange with the other passengers the return trip and get your transport to wait for you. Another sensible advice is to hire a licensed guide to take you through the caves - the going rate is RM80.

The national park is located by the Niah River, which is 3 km from Batu Niah. You can reach it by walking the 3 km, or take a taxi, or long boat (if one is available) or simply drive yourself.

Entrance to Niah National Park is RM10 per adult, payable at the park headquarters which open from 9:00 am to 5:30 pm daily. The cave is located across Sungai Niah, which you can cross by boat. The ride costs RM1.00 until 5:30 pm, and then RM1.50 between 5:30 pm and 7:30 pm. Arrange with the boatman in advance if you are coming back late.

There are hostels at the park headquarters. The hostel has 4-bed dorms with fan going for RM42, lodges with two four-bed rooms for RM160-240 each, and VIP chalets for RM525.
