The Old Saints Church of Taiping is the first Anglican church in the Malay States. It stands on a plot of land donated by W.V. Drummond, an estate owner from Shanghai.
The original structure of the Old Saints Church was designed by Australian architect G.A. Lefroy. It was completed in 1886 and consecrated in 1887, along Main Road, now called Jalan Taming Sari. Within its compound are the graves of the British officers who expired while on duty away from their homeland. Today their intricate tombstones are of much interest to heritage enthusiasts.
Two of the most exquisite treasures within the Old Saints Church are its stained glass windows and its pipe organ. The pipe organ is now used only on special occasions.
The Old Saints Church is one of the stops during a recently conducted Site Visit by the Penang Heritage Trust of which I am a council member.
