Pangkor Island provides useful tips for visiting it. Pangkor is an island on the west coast of Peninsula Malaysia. Pangkor has a land area of only 8 square kilometers, and a population of 25,000 inhabitants, most of whom depend on the sea for their livelihood. Pangkor is reachable from the Jetty in Lumut, a journey that takes approximately 40 minutes, and costs RM10 return.
When tin was discovered in Perak, Pangkor became important for its strategic location. Over three hundred years ago, the Dutch built a fort there to protect the tin trade. You can explore the ruins of Dutch Fort in Pangkor. The tin mining in Perak also resulted in a power tussle for the Perak throne, which ended with direct British intervention in the affairs of the state. The historic treaty was signed in 1874 on board a steamship off Pangkor Island, between Sir Andrew Clarke on behalf of the British, and Raja Abdullah of Perak.

I explored Pangkor Island with Eng Keat, a friend I made through AsiaExplorers. Together, we hired a motorbike and rode all around the island, stopping at different places. If you are coming to Pangkor, I would recommend hiring a motorbike or even a car. Taxis are expensive on the island while renting a bicycle might not be a good idea unless you are the athletic type, as the road around Pangkor Island is pretty steep.
