Buddhist temples can be found in many places in Penang. Many of the oldest Buddhist temples in Penang are of Thai or Burmese origin, which follow Theravada Buddhism, unlike the Chinese temples which are mostly Taoist. Nevertheless there are a few Chinese Buddhist temples, often following Mahayana Buddhism. The layman Chinese person may call himself a Buddhist, but might not be able to distinguish whether he is a believer of Mahayana or Theravada Buddhism, and is quite likely to unknowingly follow all and everything.
