Churches in Penang comprises many different denominations. When the British established their presence in Penang, they brought with them their Anglican faith. The St George's Church in the oldest Anglican church building in Penang, as well as in Malaysia. Alongside the Protestant, Captain Francis Light who founded the settlement also invited the Eurasians who were Roman Catholics, to make a new home in Penang. This brought along the Roman Catholic faith, with the Church of Assumption along Farquhar Street and Church of the Immaculate Conception being two of the oldest in Penang.
By the mid 19th century, many other Protestant denominations have established themselves in Penang including the Methodist, Baptist and the Assemblies. The charismatic movement brought along pentacostal churches to Penang by the early part of the 20th century, gathering momentum towards the middle part of the century.
Today many of the church services are conducted in English and Mandarin, with a smaller number in Tamil. Churches catering to the guest worker community also conduct their services in Bahasa Indonesia as well as in Tagalog. The following is a list of the major churches in Penang.
