Penang has more heritage sites than any other city or town in Malaysia. Apart from the star attractions, many of Penang's heritage sites go unnoticed and under appreciated. The inscription of George Town as a Unesco as a World Heritage Site on 7 July 2008 brought a much-needed injection of life to the otherwise decaying old quarter of George Town, bringing attention to the heritage structures.

There is much to learn from the heritage buildings in Penang, particularly those within George Town. Careful study will reveal different styles of constructions of the shophouses - a combo term to denote a townhouse in which the ground floor is used for commerce while the upper floor serves as residence. The earliest shophouses still standing in Penang are low, simple structures. As the city acquired prosperity, from the mid 1860's onwards, more elaborate shophouses, with intricate mouldings, and making use of the best of western architecture against an eastern sense of aesthetics, create a wonderful, eclectic style that is pravalent throughout the peninsula, but most apparently represented in Penang.
