Perlis is the northernmost state in Malaysia. it protrudes into the southern part of Thailand, and shares a border with the Thai provinces of Satun and Songkhla to the north, and with the Malaysian state of Kedah to the south. With an area of only 810 sq km, Perlis is one of the smallest states in Malaysia. It also has the smallest population, of only 210,000. The capital is Kangar while the royal town is Arau.

History of Perlis

Perlis was originally part of Kedah. After the Siamese conquered Kedah in 1821, the latter was annexed as a Siamese territory until 1842, when Siam finally restored the sultan of Kedah, Sultan Ahmad Tajuddin, to the throne. By then, the new state of Perlis was created out of former Kedah territory. Kedah remained a vassal state to Siam until 1909, when the Anglo-Siamese Treaty transferred control of Kedah to the British.

The rulers of Perlis are titled raja instead of sultan. The first Raja of Perlis was Syed Hussain Jamalulail, who was the maternal grandson of the Sultan of Kedah.

Getting there

The Changlun Kuala Perlis Highway (Route 194) connects to the North South Expressway at Changlun. It is the main artery to Perlis.
