Plentong is a fast growing suburb of Johor Bahru. Plentong traces its beginnings to the turn of the 20th century, when it was a Chinese riverside settlement. The settlement, called a Kangkar meaning "by the foot of the river" in Hokkien, was located by the banks of the Plentong River, and was headed by a Kangchu, or "river master", who received a deed from the Sultan, called a surat sungai, to administer and collect river tax. That was then.
Today Plentong is totally transformed into a bustling residential and industrial neighbourhood. To cater to the needs of the residential estates in Plentong, a number of shopping malls and hypermarkets have been built here, among them Giant Hypermart Plentong and Tesco Extra Plentong.

The subdistrict, or mukim, of Plentong has a population of half a million people, making it one of the most populous subdistricts in Malaysia. Route 3, the East Coast Highway, pass through Plentong on its way from Johor Bahru to Kota Tinggi, and onwards to Rantau Panjang in Kelantan.
