Pulau Duyong is the biggest river at the estuary of the Terengganu River in Kuala Terengganu. Actually the name refers to Pulau Duyong Besar, as there is another smaller island to the north of it called Pulau Duyong Kecil. Both islands have been joined together through sedimentation and reclamation.

Pulau Duyong is traditionally the home of boat builders who have lived here for generations, creating wonderful sailing vessels in support of Kuala Terengganu's fishing community. However, traditional boat building is becoming an endangered trade, as modern boat building as well as rising cost of cengal wood have driven many boat builders out of business.

Apart from the boat builders, Pulau Duyong is also the site for the annual Monsoon Cup, which is held at the Terengganu Heritage Bay Club (Kelab Teluk Warisan Terengganu). If you are a heritage enthusiast, you should visit Kota Lama Duyong, a heritage building on Pulau Duyong Kecil which was the home of Muslim scholar Tok Syeikh Duyong.

Getting there

The easiest way to reach Pulau Duyong is by car. Take the Sultan Mahmud Bridge, which crosses Sungai Terengganu. It has an interchange to Pulau Duyong.
