About Punan Sama

Punan Sama is a Punan longhouse village along the Rajang River in the Belaga district, Kapit Division of Sarawak. It is about two hours by express riverboat from Kapit. It was formerly known as Lovuk Tepeleang.

Punan Sama longhouse was the result of a dispute that took place a long time ago within the Punan longhouse of headman Kavu Oka. The elder son of Kavu Oka, Salui, had a conflict with the younger son, Bejeang. As a result, the two brothers parted ways.

Bejeang and his followers moved across the Rajang River to a place called Susou River. From there, they moved further up the Rajang River and settled at Meah-Rejang junction. There were kelirieng poles erected there for the burial of Punan aristocrats.

Under the leadership of headman Jiui, the Punan Tepeleang group also moved up the Rajang River. Iban encroachment caused them to move upriver to Kayan territory. Their abandoned longhouse was later burnt down by the Iban tribe.
