About RebabRebab is a Malay string instrument that traces its origin to the Middle East. Its use spread through the Islamic trading routes to North Africa, Middle East, Europe and even here in the Far East. The are both the plucked versions, called kabuli rebab, and the bowed version, which has a spike at the bottom for the instrument to rest on the ground.Rebab has a small, rounded body. The front is usually covered with sheepskin. It has a long neck with a pegbox at the end. 2-3 strings are attached. The rebab has no fingerboard. It can be held upright with it resting on the lap or on the ground. The bow of the rebab is usually more curved than that of the violin. ![]() Rebab Author: Georges Jansoone (cc-by-3.0-unported) |
