About Sacred Heart CathedralSacred Heart Cathedral is the Roman Catholic cathedral of the archdiocese of Kota Kinabalu. It is the main parish church of the diocese of the city, with subparishes at the Church of Mary Immaculate and St Simon Church.The Sacred Heart Cathedral building replaced the older Pro-Cathedral building, which was built in 1953, had to be taken down due to some fault to the roof structure that is compromising on the safety of the building. Although there was a degree of sentimental attachment to the old building, it was decided that it had to go, as the structure presented neither archaeological nor aesthetic value deeming worthy for preservation. The present cathedral building in stages in 1981. The roof was completed in July, the scaffoldings removed in mid September, the pews were installed in November, the same month that the 130-feet tall bell tower was completed.
