About Sarawak State Legislative Assembly Building

The new Sarawak State Legislative Assembly Building, or DUN (Dewan Undangan Negeri) is an iconic government building in Petra Jaya, Kuching. It is located on the opposite side of the Sarawak River, between Fort Margherita and the Astana, facing the Kuching Waterfront. Also called the Kuching State Assembly Building, it was officially opened by DYMM Seri Paduka Baginda Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin, the constitutional king of Malaysia, on 27 July, 2009 to much pomp and pagentry and the accompaniment of fireworks.

The nine-storey complex is reminiscent of the Bidayuh Longhouse. This is somewhat in keeping with the hat-shape design of many Kuching administrative buildings, the City Hall of North Kuching, where the Cat Museum is located, coming to mind.

The Sarawak State Legislative Assembly Building costs RM300 million in taxpayers money, which drew criticisms for the lavish price tag, requiring several state assemblymen to come out in defence of the building as an upcoming tourist attraction.
