About Sematan

Sematan is small coastal village located on a narrow western strip of Sarawak. Sandwiched between the Indonesian border and the South China Sea, it faces a beautiful bay lined with a waterfront promenade. There is also a long concrete pier that juts out into the sea - you can stand there and get wonderful sunrise in the morning.

Sematan is some 107 km northwest of Kuching. It is noted as the starting point for the Pan Borneo Highway which continues through the major towns of Sarawak on its way north to Brunei and Sabah.

At the northern end of the Sematan waterfront promenade are some stilt houses. The sandy beach is said to stretch all the way to Tanjung Datu, at the very tip of Sarawak, but how much is true I have not tested.

Getting there

Take STC Bus No. EP7 from Kuching to Lundu (fare: RM8.30, duration: 1 1/2 hours). From Lundu, catch STC Bus No. 17 to Sematan (fare: RM3.70).
