About Spaoh

Spaoh is a small town on the banks of the Batang Layar river, in the Betong Division of Sarawak. It has a population of about 17,000, comprising mostly of the Orang Laut Malays, Ibans and Chinese. Although the Malays outnumber the Ibans in Spaoh, the lingua franca of the town is Iban, widely understood by the Malay and Chinese communities here.

Spaoh comprises Ili Pasar Spaoh, Bungin, Paku Ili, Ulu Paku and Ulu Anyut. The town is renowned for its production of salted pufferfish, or ikan masin buntal, a local delicacy among the Malay community in Spaoh. The fish is also the mascot of the village.
