About the Suluk
The Tausug or Suluk people are the tribal people of Sulu. The "sug" in Tausug and the name "Suluk" are actually the same word which also mean the Sulu people. The Tausug people living in Sabah call themselves Tausug, but will describe themselves as Suluk on official documents such as birth certificates. They are similar to the Moro people of Mindanao, Sulu and Palawan. There was once a Sultanate of Sulu which today is part of Sabah and the Philippines. The Tausug can be found in all parts of Sabah. They tend to be skilled workers, in comparison to the Bajaus which are often less skilled.
In Malaysia, many young Tausug are no longer able to speak their Suluk dialect. They are speaking the other Sabahan dialects, Malay and English. Their most popular dance is called Daling-Daling (also called Pangalay in the Philippines). In this dance, the female dancers wear artificial elongated fingernails made of brass or silver, called janggay. The dance is based on the Vidhyadhari, an ancient Buddhist legend.
