The Taiping Convent was founded by the three sisters from the convent in Penang (read Convent Light Street) who arrived in 1899 and proceeded to start classes for the masses, and an ophanage for the unwanted children. The present building dates back to 1938. The British government turned it into a military hospital in 1941, and subsequently, the Japanese used it as their military headquarters, the Gunsei Kanbu.
