Tasik Dayang Bunting is a deep freshwater lake on Pulau Dayang Bunting, the Island of the Pregnant Maiden, in Langkawi. Approaching the island, one can see the outlying of the island appearing like that of a pregnant woman lying down. The name of the island and lake are attributed to the legend of Mambang Sari, a lovely fairy princess who married Mat Teja, earthly prince (some versions of the story puts him to be just a commoner) who arrived on the island and was enchanted by the beauty of the lake. Her first child died at birth. She decided to bury it in the crystal clear waters of the lake. On doing so, she blessed the lake, saying that any childless women who bathe in the lake would be able to conceive.
Geologically, Tasik Dayang Bunting was the result of the caving in of a subterranean cavern. After the roof of the massive cave collapse, the gap filled up with freshwater to a depth of 600 feet, making it the deepest lake in Langkawi, and quite likely, in the whole of Peninsular Malaysia. The unique geological feature of Tasik Dayang Bunting makes it one of the highlights of the Langkawi Geopark.
