About Tengkolok

Tengkolok is a traditional Malay head gear for men. Also known as destar, the tengkolok is only worn on very special occasions, such as by the king during the opening of Parliament, or a groom on his wedding day. The tengkolok comprises a long band of silk fabric, usually an exquisite piece of songket, that has been wrapped or folded around to form a turban. There are several different ways to fold the tengkolok. These folding styles are called solek. Each solek has a colourful name such as Anak Gajah Menyusu (Suckling Baby Elephant), Gajah Berjuang (Charging Elephant), Lang Menyusur Angin (Eagle in the Wind), Menyonsong Angin (Facing the Wind), Garam Sebuku (A Block of Salt), Pucuk Pisang Patah (Broken Banana Shoot), Ayam Patah Kepak (Chicken with Broken Wing), and Dendam Tak Sudah (Undying Revenge).

The tengkolok worn by the king, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, on coronation day is one of black silk embroidered with gold threads. It is wrapped in a solek called Dendam Tak Sudah, which originates from Negri Sembilan. The emblem of the Government of Malaysia adorns the front of the king's tengkolok. It shows the national crest inside a diamond-studded 14-pointed star and crescent moon.
