About the Teochews

Teochew is a dialect group of Chinese in Malaysia. Teochews come from the Chaoshan region in northeastern Guangdong Province in southern China. The main Teochew cities in China are Chaozhou, Shantou (formerly Swatow) and Jieyang. The Teochew dialect shares closer resemblence to the Hokkien dialect (called Minnan) in neighbouring Fujian Province, than with the Cantonese dialect within Guangdong Province itself. It is also considered one of the oldest Chinese dialects, carrying with it features of ancient Chinese that has been eroded by time in other Chinese dialects.

Teochew people settled in Malaya since the 18th century in Province Wellesley and Kedah. There were significant numbers of Teochew farmers in Bukit Mertajam and Batu Kawan. There were already Teochews on mainland Penang when Captain Francis Light established Penang Island as a British trading port.

At the encouragement of Temenggong Ibrahim, Teochew immigrants also settled in Johor, where they were involved in planting gambier and pepper. The cities of Johor Bahru, Pontian and Muar have a significant number of Teochews, and a lower percentage in Batu Pahat. The Teochews established riverside settlements called Kangkar, which means "at the foot of the river". These settlements are headed by a Kangchu, or river master, who acts as headman. He is granted a deed, called surat sungai, from the Sultan of Johor, to collect tax for the produce that goes out from the river.

Teochews are also found in Sabak Bernam in Selangor, and in the hinterlands of Malacca.
