About the Tindal

Tindal is a subgroup of the Kadazan-Dusun. The Tindal subgroup is said to inhabit the coastal region and are known as the Dusun Tindal. They share similarities with the Dusun of the interior areas.

A University of Hawaii study was conducted on the vowel-changing phenomenon in the Tindal dialect, through an interview with one Wendell Gingging, a native speaker of Tindal who was born in 1974 and grew up in the Kota Belud area, in the West Coast Division of Sabah.

The Dusun Tindal have beautiful traditional houses with thatch roofing. The roof ridges are adorned with sinangau-sangau, which are roof finials in the form of cross horns, similar to what you would find in perhaps the Batak or Thai houses.

The Dusun Tindal has a dance called Mongigol which is usually performed during weddings and social gatherings. The dance, which reenacts the movements when harvesting rice, is a reflection of the lifestyle of the Tindal people.
