About Ulu Kalumpang Forest Reserve

Ulu Kalumpang Forest Reserve is a nature conservation area in eastern Sabah. It covers an area of 51,118 hectares on the Tawau Peninsula. The forest reserve is on a very mountainous area, with several peaks on the southern border including Mount Magdalena (1310 meters), Mount Lucia (1201 meters) and Maria Peak (1083 meters). Sungai Kalumpang forms the border separating the southern and northern part of the reserve. Ulu Kalumpang Forest Reserve is within Tawau Highlands, which also includes the Tawau Hills National Park. Ulu Kalumpang Forest Reserve is home to a high number of orang utans. 183 are recorded to be staying in the forest reserve. In addition, there are 180 species of birds, including six species of hornbills. The reserve is also home to the Bornean pgymy elephant and the Sumatran rhinoceros. The vegetation ranges from lowland mixed dipterocarp forest to kerangas forest and montane forest.
