Wan Muhammad Saman Building
Wan Mat Saman Building, Alor Star, Kedah
Wan Muhammad Saman Building or Bangunan Wan Muhammad Saman, is a colonial-style building in the centre of Alor Star. It was built between 1939 and 1941, just before the Second World War. During that time, it housed the office of the Sultan of Kedah as well as several government departments. After the Second World War, it was used by the Department of Agriculture, the education and information departments, land office and the Kota Setar District Office. Today the Wan Muhammad Saman Building is used as the state Islamic council.
Wan Muhammad Saman Building.
Wan Muhammad Saman Building was named after the famous Menteri Besar of the Sultanate of Kedah of the late 19th century. Wan Mat Saman, as he was also known, was instrumental in the construction of the Wan Mat Saman Canal, which helped irrigate the paddy fields in the plains of Kedah. Wan Mat Saman served during the reigns of Sultan Ahmad Tajuddin Mukarram Syah and Sultan Abdul Hamid Halim Syah.
I explored the Wan Muhammad Saman Building while documenting the sights in Alor Star for AsiaExplorers.
