Warisan Merdeka Mega Project, Kuala Lumpur

Warisan Merdeka is a meja project which prime minister Dato Seri Najib Tun Razak announced during the presentation of the 2011 Budget. The project is to be developed on a 36-acre land on which stands Stadium Merdeka and Stadium Negara. The two historical buildings will be retained as national heritage sites while the area around them is developed.
The centrepiece of the development will be a 100-storey skyscraper, which will be the new tallest building in Kuala Lumpur. The entire project, which includes a shopping complex and condominiums, is expected to cost between RM2.5 to RM5 billion. The skyscraper alone will cost RM2.5 and RM3 billion. It will have a gross floor space of 3 million sq ft and 2.2 million sq ft of lettable space.
As soon as the project was announced, it immediately became a target of criticism, the majority of which questioning the wisdom of spending such a large amount of money. The prime minister has since denied that the skyscraper was his idea, sayign the proposal was made by the government's investment company, Permodalan Nasional Berhad. That statement only fueled more criticism that it was yet another act of washing hands in the face of an uproar.
