About Wayang Kulit

Wayang Kulit or shadow play is the shadow puppet theatre of Malaysia. It was designated a Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity on 7 November 2003 by UNESCO.

Wayang Kulit originates in Indonesia. There are elements of Hinduism in wayang kulit, particularly in the choice of stories. The Hindu epics of Ramayana and Mahabharata are the main contributors to Wayang Kulit stories.

In wayang kulit, the intricately coloured characters are only shown in shadow form. The puppets are usually made of leather or buffalo hide. The word "kulit" means skin or parchment. According to popular belief, the hide of a buffalo that is struck by lightning is the best choice for wayang kulit puppets, because the spirit from the lightning inhabits the created puppet.

The different types of wayang kulit popular in Malaysia includes Wayang Kulit Kelantan, also known as Wayang Kulit Siam, and Wayang Kulit Purwo, which originates from Indonesia. The puppets of Wayang Kulit Kelantan is always shown standing on something, be it a dragon, a snake, boat or sword. One of the puppet's hands is movable while the other is fixed.

The shadows are cast on a cotton screen and illuminated by a single oil lamp. Today it is more likely that an electric bulb is used for the lighting.

The puppeteer in Wayang Kulit is called Tok Dalang. He is a one-man-show. There is only one Tok Dalang to a Wayang Kulit performance, but he is accompanied by an ensemble of musicians. The Tok Dalang tells the story, articulate all the different voices, and manoever the puppets.

Today Wayang Kulit has suffered from the introduction of modern entertainment. It is still performed during cultural events and for tourism purposes in places such as at Tourism Malaysia Office in Kuala Lumpur.
