About Winter Solstice FestivalWinter Solstice Festival, also called Dong Zhi in Mandarin or Tang Chek in Hokkien, is a Chinese celebration that happens at the end of the year, usually betweern 21 and 23 December. Due to it falling right before Christmas, Christmas itself is known as Ang Mo Tang Chek, literally Westerner's Winter Solstice Festival - which doesn't really veer from the truth. Well anyway, the name "Tang Chek" in Chinese means "arrival of winter". This is when the sun has reached the Tropic of Capricorn, and therefore it is the longest night of the year in the northern hemisphere.In Malaysia, the Winter Solstice Festival is celebrated by eating "Kueh Iee". Kueh Iee is Hokkien for "round confectionery", and is also called Tang Yuan in Mandarin. This is balls made from glutinous rice flour that is served in a clear sugar syrup. The roundness of the Kueh Iee signifies completely and prosperity. The traditional colours of the Kueh Iee balls are white, for abundance, and pink, for good luck. However, other colours are also included, such as green and yellow, creating a multi-colour dessert that thrill that children at home. |
