Kyaukhtatgyi Buddha (also written Kyaukhtatgyi Pagoda, Chaukhtatgyi Paya and Chauk Htat Kyi Pagoda) of Yangon is the largest reclining Buddha statue in the world. The colossal Kyaukhtatgyi is located on Shwegondine Road and measures 70 m (230 ft) long. The original Kyaukhtatgyi image was built in 1907 by Sir Hpo Thar but it suffered damage due to the elements over the years. In 1957 the original statue was demolished and a new one built in its place, completed in 1966, at a cost of US$70,000, most from donations.
A tazaung (pavilion) shelters the Kyaukhtatgyi Buddha from the elements. There is also a monastery near the pagoda that accommodates over six hundred monks. The entire cost of maintenance is covered by donations.
