Provinces of the Philippines

The Philippines are divided into 79 provinces. These are further subdivided into component cities and municipalities. The National Capital Region, which comprises Metro Manila, is an autonomous region independent from the provincial government. Heading each province is an elected governor.
The provinces of the Philippines are grouped into 17 regions based on geographical, cultural and ethnological characteristics. Of these, 14 are numbered according to their geographical location from north to south. In addition, the National Capital Region, Cordillera Administrative Region and Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao are not numbered.
