Qatar is a country occupying the Qatar Peninsula off the Arabian Peninsula, in the Middle East. The country is surrounded by the Persian Gulf, with a border shared with Saudi Arabia to the south. Qatar covers 11,437 sq km (4,416 sq mi) and has a population of 1.7 million people (2011 estimate). The capital and largest city is Doha.

People have been living in the Qatari area since the time of antiquity. The inhabitants were pagans until the spread of Islam to the area in the 7th century. Due to the harsh climate, population has been sparse, limited to only a few nomadic tribes.
The Portuguese colonized Qatar and ruled it from 1517 until 1538, when they lost it to the Ottomans. Qatar was part of the Ottoman Empire until 1913. Qatar was a British protectorate from 1916 until independence on 3 September, 1971.

The Doha International Airport (DOH) is the only commercial airport in Qatar. It is the base of Qatar Airways. Foreign workers in the oil and gas industries form a big portion of its traffic. The airport will soon be replaced by the New Doha International Airport presently under construction.
