Bonham Street, Singapore

Bonham Street is a street in the Downtown Core of Singapore. Today it is reduced to a riverside walkway between UOB Plaza and the Singapore River.
Bonham Street was originally called Tavern Street. It was renamed in 1858 in honour of Sir Samuel George Bonham, who was the Resident Councillor of Singapore in 1831-37, and then the Governor of the Straits Settlements from 1837-1843.
In the 19th century, the trading firm of Katz Brothers had their godown along Chulia Street with its back to Bonham Street. As a result, the local Hokkiens called the street Tuan Katz Thokorh Auboey, meaning "(street) behind Mr Katz's Warehouse".

Learn more about the Streets of Singapore
If you wish to learn more about the streets of Singapore, I recommend that you get a copy of the Toponymics: A Study of Singapore Street Names (Geography & Environment Research) by Victor R. Savage and Brenda S.A. Yeoh (Eastern Universities Press by Marshall Cavendish, ISBN 981 210 364 3). It helped me a lot in broadening my knowledge of the streets, and made it more fun when I explored and get to know them personally.
