 Cenotaph, Esplanade Park, Singapore
The Cenotaph - a monument in honor to the dead whose remains lie elsewhere - at the Esplanade Park was erected to commemorate the 124 Singaporean men who died in World War I. It was designed by Denis Santry of Swan & McClaren, and is said to be modelled after the Cenotaph in Whitehall, London. The foundation stone laid by Sir Lawrence Nunns Guillemard, the Governor of the Straits Settlement, on 15 November 1920.
The Cenotaph was unveiled on 31 March 1922 to honor the dead of World War I. The steps leading to up the Cenotaph is engrave with the years when World War I was fought. At the end of World War II, however, the reverse side of the Cenotaph is also engrave to honor those who died in the second World War.
