Esplanade - Theatres on the Bay is Singapore's busiest performing arts centre. It is located along Esplanade Drive fronting the Marina Bay and Elizabeth Walk, near the mouth of the Singapore River. The Esplanade is a purpose-built performing arts centre.

In June 1990, the Singapore government approved the decision to build a performing arts centre. A reclaimed site was chosen and architects from all over the world were invited to submit their designs.

Esplanade comprises a 2000-seat theatre for the performing arts, and a 1600-seat concert hall. Also located within Esplanade is the Library@esplanade, the first performing arts library in singapore. There is also an outdoor performing space and retail and food outlets at the centre. Visitors can enjoy the view from its roof terrace located on the fourth floor of the building.

Esplanade occupies the site of the former Satay Club food centre, which has since been relocated to the Sembawang shopping centre. It was built at a cost of S$600 million and was opened to the public on 12 October, 2002.

The response of the Singapore public to the architecture of the Esplanade has so far been mixed. Many has since affectionately nicknamed it the Durian, in reference to the shape of the building that resembles the popular fruit.
