On this page I want to show you the many Hindu temples of Singapore. There are around 343,000 ethnic Indians in our island nation today, forming 9% of the population. They are the third largest ethnic group.
The Indians trace their ancestry to an influx of immigrants who arrived in Singapore in the 19th century. Many were young unmarried men who came as labourers, soldiers as well as convicts. However, there were also the educated class, the merchants, traders and money lenders.
Of the Indians in Singapore, just over 55% are practising Hindus. The majority are "festival-day" Hindus. There are around 35 Hindu temples in Singapore today.
As you explore the many Hindu temples in Singapore today, you will see the majority are of the Dravidian architectural style similar to those you would find in southern India, in places like Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
There are also temples built by Sri Lankan Tamils, the Chettiars, the North Indians, and so on. Two major Hindu temples are today National Monuments of Singapore.
