Keong Saik Road, Singapore
Keong Saik Road (see map) is a one-way minor road in the Singapore Chinatown. For much of its route, Keong Saik Road is lined with eateries, restored shophouses, multi-storey hawker centres and high-rise flats. It starts at New Bridge Road in the north, and ends at Neil Road in the south. Between the intersection of Kreta Ayer Road and Neil Road, it follows the curve of the former railway line, today readapted as Duxton Plain Park.
Keong Saik Road was named after 19th century local tycoon Tan Keong Saik. He is one of the many wealthy Tan clansmen who relocated from Malacca. Keong Saik was a pillar of society during the later part of the 19th century. He served as, among others, the director of Tanjong Pagar Dock, and was appointed a Justice of Peace.
Keong Saik Road was one of the red-light districts of Singapore in the mid 20th century. It has since been gentrified, with the shophouses being turned into bistros or boutique hotels.
