Merdeka Bridge, Singapore
Merdeka Bridge is a bridge across the Kallang Basin in Singapore, at the mouths of the Kallang River and Rochor River. The bridge takes the Nicoll Highway across the basin. It was designed by the Public Works Department and was officially opened to traffic on 17 August, 1956.

The entrances to the Merdeka Bridge are originally flanked by lions. These were sculptures by Italian Rodolfo Nolli (1888-1963). They were called the Merdeka Lions. However, the lions have since been removed.
The Merdeka Bridge celebrates the self-governance of Singapore, attained from the British in 1955. The country does not attain full independence until 1963.
