Pearl's Hill, Singapore

Pearl's Hill is a small hill in the Chinatown area of Singapore. It is bounded by Chin Swee Road to the north, Outram Park to the west, Pearl Bank to the south and Pearl's Hill Terrace to the east. There is a park at the top of the hill called Pearl's Hill City Park. It lies above the Pearl's Hill Reservoir, originally built in 1898.
Pearl's Hill was named after Captain James Pearl, the captain of the ship that brought Stamford Raffles to Singapore in 1819. The hill has been occupied by Chinese gambier planters even before the arrival of the British. Capt. James Pearls got the permission of the Temenggong to build his residence on the hill, which he named Mount Raffles.
Over the course of the next few years, Capt. Pearl continued to purchase land on the hill from the gambier farmers and then replacing the existing gambier trees with pepper trees. Raffles was however unhappy with the tenure provided to Pearl for the hill, and instructed the Resident of Singapore, Lieutenant William Farquhar (who relocated to Singapore from Malacca), to repossess the Pearl's land.
Disgruntled, Captain Pearl renamed the hill after himself. After selling the hill back to the government, he retired to Europe in 1828.
