 Pickering Street, Singapore
Pickering Street is one of the shorter streets in downtown Singapore. It covers a distance of approximately one city block, from the junction of China Street to the intersection of South Bridge Road, after which it is known as Upper Pickering Street. Coming out from the north side of Pickering Street are Synagogue Street and George Street.
Pickering Street was named in honour of William A. Pickering, the first Chinese Protector of Singapore. He arrived in Singapore in 1871, and held the distinction of being the first European official who was fluent in Chinese. Under William Pickering, the British colonial government set up the Chinese Protectorate to look after the interest of the Chinese immigrants.
Although William Pickering had passed away in 1907, his contribution was remembered when Macao Street and Upper Macao Street were renamed on 1 January, 1925, in his honour.
How to reach Pickering Street
Take the North South Line or the East West Line of the Singapore MRT to the Raffles Place MRT Station. Walk west along Church Street until you arrive at Pickering Street.
