Raffles Landing Site
9 Empress Place, Singapore 179556

Your base for exploring this destination is the city of Singapore. For travel information about Singapore, go to Singapore Travel Guide. If planning a trip to Singapore, view the Singapore Budget Accommodation Map to find a suitable place to spend the night.

The Raffles Landing Site is a spot by the bank of the Singapore River in front of the Empress Place Building. Considering the mouth of the Singapore River has undergone numerous land reclamation from the establishment of Singapore as a British trading post until today, I am not sure how accurate is the account that this really marks the spot where Sir Stamford Raffles first landed in Singapore - or is it just a marketing exercise courtesy of the Tourism Board. But as it is generally accepted as the site where Raffles first set foot on Singapore in January 1819, I am documenting it in AsiaExplorers as such.

Statue of Stamford Raffles at the site denoted as his landing place.

The most prominent feature marking the spot is the polymarble statue of Raffles. This statue was unveiled in 1972, and is the second Stamford Raffles statue in Singapore - the first is standing just a short distance away, in front of the Victoria Theatre & Concert Hall.
