Science Centre (map) is an edutainment centre created to make learning science fun for all ages. It is located at 15 Science Centre Road in Jurong. The centre first opened on 10 December, 1977, and was officiated by Dr Toh Chin Chye, the Minister in charged. It occupies a 10-hectare site near the Jurong Lake, and includes the main building, an annexe building, an outdoor Ecogarden, the Omni-Theatre and Snow City.

The galleries at Science Centre include the Bioethics Gallery, Climate Change Gallery, Discovery Zone, Fire Gallery, Genome Gallery, iSpace Gallery, Living with Viruses Exhibition, Marine Alcove, Mathematics Everywhere & Everyday Gallery, Our Solar System Exhibit, Primary Science Learning Experience, Science for A Day Gallery, Sound Exhibition, Space Science Gallery, The Mind's Eye Gallery, and Waterworks Gallery.

Special Highlights of Science Centre

  1. Snow City
    As its name suggests, this is a climate-controlled environment simulating a winter environment. Snow City covers a 3,000 sq meter area within Science Centre complex. The Snow Chamber, where you can experience snow and ice, covers 1,200 sq meters of the area. Here, the temperature is maintained at a constant -5°C.

    Perhaps the most popular attraction at Snow City is the Snow Slope. This is a 60-meter slope where you can go snowtubing. Other attractions include the Ice Bar, Hot Chocolate Bar, Polar Bear Gallery, Santa's Cabin and Little Penguin's Snowy Children Playground.

    Admission fee to Snow City is for adults $14 for one hour and $27 for two hours, for children 3-16 years it is $14 for one hour and $22 for two hours. Senior adults aged 55 years and above enjoy a discount of $2. No cameras and video cameras are allowed inside the Snow Chamber. See also the Value Packages under Admission to Science Centre.
  2. Omni-Theatre
    This is an IMAX movie theatre within the Science Centre complex. Opened in 1987, it is presently the only IMAX dome theatre in Singapore. The 5-storey dome screen provides an exciting viewing experience not found in conventional theatres.

    Admission fee to just the Omni-Theatre is $10 for adults, $7 for children. Senior citizens aged 55 and above pay $8 but only during weekdays. For the admission price, you get to watch a 40-minute IMAX movie. See also the Value Packages under Admission to Science Centre.

Feature Sections of Science Centre

  1. Kinetic Garden
    Located in front of the Science Centre complex, the Kinetic Garden demonstrates scientific principles and physics. The features of the Kinetic Gallery include the Lithophone, where each stone emit a different tune, the Walk Your Weight see saw, and the Magic Swing.

  2. Ecogarden
    This garden occupies the outside of the Science Centre complex. In keeping with its name, the garden attempts to allow the plants to grow with minimal intervention and pest control, apart from the occasional pruning and maintenance.

    At the Ecogarden, visitors may visit the Rubber Centenery Monument, which provides a chronological history of the introduction of rubber to Singapore, creating the rubber industry in Southeast Asia. There is a mini rubber plantation showcasing how rubber trees are tapped.

    Other highlights of the Ecogarden include a Fernarium, with different types of ferns; a Mini-Orchard, with different fruit trees; a Lime Tree Corner exhibiting different varieties of lime trees; a Medicinal Garden with its collection of medicinal plants and herbs; Ponds exhibits a variety of aquatic plants and animals; Common Wayside Trees showcasing some of the trees found along the roads in Singapore; Culinary Garden hosting a plethora of spice plants; Economic Crop Mini-Plantation provides an insight into economic crops such as oil palm, coffee, cocoa, coconut, cashew and eucalyptus; Leaf Litter Corner educates on what can be found within a heap of dead leaves; Vegetable Beds showcases a variety of vegetables; and finally, the Tree House, a fun place to take a rest after all the exploring!

Visiting Science Centre, Singapore

Take the East West Line or North South Line to the Jurong East MRT Station (EW24/NS1). From there, transfer to Bus 66 or 335. Alternatively, it is possible to walk from the Jurong East MRT Station (see map). The distance is about 850 meters.

  3. Admission to Science Centre and watch one 40-minute IMAX Movie at Omni-Theatre
    Adult: $16, Child: $10

  4. Admission to Science Centre and enjoy Snow City for one hour
