Tan Kim Seng Fountain was not built by Mr Tan Kim Seng, the Malacca-born philanthropist, and one of the wealthiest merchants in Singapore at his time. Instead, this beautiful Victorian-style fountain was built by the Singapore Town Council in recognition of a generous donation which Mr Tan made for the installation of the first waterworks in Singapore. The donation of S$13,000 was a princely sum at the time, 1857.

The Tan Kim Seng Fountain was unveiled in 1882. Its original location was at Fullerton Square, but it was moved to Battery Road in 1905, before settling down right here, at Esplanade Park, in 1925, where it stays to this day. I photographed it as part of the documentation for the AsiaExplorers Singapore Travel Guide.
