VivoCity, Singapore
VivoCity is the largest shopping mall in Singapore. It is located at HarbourFront. A soft opening was carried out on 7 October, 2006, followed by an official opening on 1 December 2006. VivaCity occupies the former site of the exhibition halls of the World Trade Centre, which is now renamed the HarbourFront Centre. It has 1,500,000 square feet (139,000 sq meters) of gross area, of which 1,100,000 square feet (102,000 sq meters) is given to retail space, making it bigger than Suntec City and Ngee Ann City, but smaller than Bangkok's CentralWorld Plaza (presently awaiting reconstruction after being torched in a riot in mid May 2010). VivoCity was designed by Japanese architect Toyo Ito, and built at a cost of S$417 million.
Since its opening, VivoCity has become the official venue for the live televised New Year countdown. So far, the countdown concerts have been held at the rooftop amphitheatre on 31 December 2006 and 31 December 2007 for the 2007 and 2008 celebrations respectively.
VivoCity has Singapore's largest cineplex, with 15 screens, operated by Golden Village. It includes one of the largest cinema screens in Southeast Asia. Anchor tenants include Toys "R" Us and retail giant Dairy Farm, which operates Cold Storage, Shop N Save, Giant Hypermarket, 7-Eleven and Dairy Farm. VivoMart is a hypermart with a gourmet food section. There is also the Giant Hypermarket on basement two and level one. Cold Storage operates Naturally Marketplace on level one as well as Guardian Pharmacy. There are two huge food courts at VivoCity, one by the Kopitiam Group and another, the Food Republic, by the BreadTalk Group.
