The Seema Malakaya is a Buddhist meditation centre located at the edge of Lake Beira. It consists of three island podiums on the lake connected to the edge of the lake by a walkway. I stopped by to explore it with a small group of AsiaExplorers members at the tail end of our exploration of Sri Lanka.
The Seema Malakaya was designed by Geoffrey Bawa, one of Colombo's most prominent architects. The temple are blue-roofed structures in the Kandyan style. The design provides ample protection against heavy rain while still allowing the flow of breeze. Two of the three islands are bordered by a row of Buddha images, and one of them even has a bodhi tree and a stupa.
