Sri Kailawasanathar Swami Devasthanam is the oldest and one of the largest Hindu temple in Colombo. It is located at Captain's Garden, Maradana district, behind the Fort Railway Station. Within it are shrines dedicated to Shiva and Ganesh.

I visited the Sri Kailawasanathar Swami Devasthanam along with my group of AsiaExplorers members when we explored Colombo. We were on one final day in Sri Lanka, and we had a "stand-in" guide to take us around the city, as our main tour guide was occupied. As the person doesn't speak much English, I had to do a bit of my own research to find out about this temple.

The compound of the temple.

Hindu priests preparing for a worship.

The lingams, or venerated stones, in the form of the phallus, used as a symbol of worship of the Hindu deity Shiva.

Bunches of coconuts. I noticed that the coconuts in Sri Lanka are a beautiful chrome yellow, unlike those I get back home which are usually green.

Sculpture on the doorway.
