Fo Guang Shan is the largest Buddhist monastery in Taiwan. It belonged to an international Mahayana Buddhist order which is headquartered in Kaohsiung. The organization also runs one of the largest charity organizations in Taiwan, called the International Buddhist Progress Society.
Fo Guang Shan was founded in 1967 by the Venerable Master Hsing Yun. It promotes Humanistic Buddhism, a Buddhist concept in tune with the aspiration of the modern world. Fo Guang Shan considers itself the fusion of all Eight Schools of Chinese Buddhism. For that reason, it is a monastic order rather than a doctrinal school.
