About Taroko Gorge
Taroko Gorge is a magnificent river gorge in eastern Taiwan. It forms the basis of the Taroko National Park. The gorge cuts its way through the mountain range, which includes some of the tallest mountains in Taiwan, rising to over 3,000 meters.
There are many sights along the length of Taroko Gorge. One of the highlights is the road itself, which winds its way by the cliff side. The road was cut right into the cliff and in places form grottos. It has come to be known as the Swallow Grotto and Tunnel of Nine Turns.
As you enter Taroko Gorge, you will pass by Changchun Shrine, or the Eternal Spring Shrine. This is a beautiful shrine by the cliff at the site of a spring, which runs down to the river below.
Being part of the Taroko National Park, the gorge is home of 144 species of birds, of which 10% are indigenous to Taiwan. There are also 30 species of mammals and over 250 species of butterflies in the area.
The main town to Taroko Gorge is the coastal city of Hualien, From there, you can take an excursion or day tour to visit the Gorge.
How to go to Taroko Gorge
You can go to Hualien from Taipei by train. The express train takes 2 hours while the local train takes 3 to 4 hours. From Hualien, you can take a bus to Taroko Gorge.
