Aonang beach, along the bay of the same name, is the main stretch of beachfront in Krabi. This is where you will find all the tourist infrastructure, such as hotels, chalets, guesthouses, restaurants, convenient stores, even tailors (there is a proliferation of tailors in all South Thailand resorts, including Koh Samui and Phuket, since the cost of doing a suit is just a fraction of the cost to do one back home in a western country.)
A wet morning at Aonang Beach.
I arrived at Aonang Beach on my way to Phi Phi Island, with a busload of AsiaExplorers members. We were coastal destinations of South Thailand, and stopped over at Aonang for a night.
Aonang has reinvented itself from a quiet fishing village to become one of the major tourist destinations of Thailand. What makes Aonang so special, and so different from other beachfronts in mainland South Thailand, is the beach itself. Scattered across the horizon, like a wide screen movie, are islands of different shapes and sizes, limestone islands invited to be explored. Some are uninhabited, while others have sprouted a resort or two, and one, Phi Phi archipelago, has develped into major tourist destinations in their own right, eclipsing Aonang.
Boats are available from Aonang, as well as its neighbouring Noppharat Thara Beach, to explore the outlying islands. Some are little more than outcrops in the sea, like Koh Tap and Koh Mor, and each has its own beauty to be appreciated.
