All around Wat Pho are Chinese-style statues. These were ballasts from ancient trading travels by ships from China. The Thais decided to use these ballasts are decorations in their temples, rather than throwing them away.
The following are some of the ballasts found in Wat Pho:
Warriors in Chinese opera-style clothes holding long swords.
Statues in western-style clothes. These are caricatures that are supposed to represent Marco Polo. There are four pairs of Marco Polo in Wat Pho, and some of them are placed as guardians to entranceways.
Wiseman with beard
Chinese monk wearing beads around the neck
Chinese ladies in dfferent hair styles
Chinese-style pagodas
